Set Up for Success

New Student Orientation Welcomes New Coogs to Campus

New Student Orientation is currently underway at UH. It is designed to instill Cougar Pride and set new Coogs up for success at the University of Houston. Through various planned academic and social activities, students get to experience what life will soon be like as they embark on their journey at the University of Houston. Here is a behind the scenes look at student orientation in action.

During the two-day experience, incoming freshmen meet fellow students and student leaders, as well as the faculty and staff who will play a pivotal role in their success.

These students were among the 48,000+ undergraduate applications UH receives annually.

The first day is focused on connecting and engaging with the UH community. New students learn about the services and programs that are here to help them succeed. They also gain insights on Cougar traditions, including the UH Fight Song (with assistance from the Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band)

The overnight portion of the program has been specifically designed to give students the chance to become familiar with campus and meet their peers. They learn about the rich history and traditions of the University of Houston.

A highlight is Coog Fest, a “welcome to the University” party with dancing, bowling, and other festivities aimed at previewing campus life. Students attending freshman orientation stay overnight in the Cougar Village II Residence Hall

Day two of orientation is focused on academic integration. Students connect with their prospective academic colleges to discuss degree plans, select courses and register for fall classes.

Incoming students represent nearly every county in Texas and every state in the U.S. as well as 90+ nations around the world.

The UH Orientation Team, or “O-Team,” delivers an enrollment experience that establishes a foundation toward college retention and graduation.

Creating a diverse, inclusive and academically competitive learning environment starts the first day each new student steps on campus and is shaped by high-touch and data-driven initiatives.
