Favorite Memories of UH

“Jumping in the fountain on my friend’s 19th birthday at midnight! It was in the middle of the week, like a Wednesday night, and we just jumped in and tried to dog paddle around since it was shallow. We were being ridiculous, but it was our freshman year and the ‘sneakiest’ thing we had done yet.”
— Ersie-Anastasia Gentzis, ’20

What’s something that’s surprised you in your current research?

Counting Heads
In recounting crimes in which third parties are present, scholars and journalists often exaggerate the number of bystanders and neglect the presence and role of upstanders. — Zachary Kaufman

Distance Doesn't Make the Heart Grow Fonder?
The closer geographically you are to an event, the more you will care about it. I’ve found that this applies to a diverse range of phenomena from pandemics such as Ebola, Zika and COVID-19, to public policies revolving around immigration, social protests and climate change. — Jeronimo Cortina

Taste Buds
There is a huge disconnect between what wine professionals believe wine culture is and what restaurant managers think. — Chris Taylor

The Availability Heuristic
I’m examining corporate statements about racial injustice that have been put out since the summer of 2020. One finding that's a little surprising to me is really how few organizations put out press releases on this issue. I think the relative newness of some organizations made it feel like lots of organizations were talking about this issue, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems like a case of availability heuristic, where we believed the occurrence of organizations doing things was higher because of the few, memorable statements we have seen. — Enrica Ruggs

What class at UH would you take?

“The Law Center’s Health Law program is one of the best in the entire country. As I specialize in Criminal Law and International Law, I don't know as much about Health Law. Given how important Health Law is, as accentuated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Supreme Court's recent overruling of Roe v. Wade, and other health issues, I would most want to take courses in Health Law.”
— Zachary Kaufman
