Latest UH Garage Wins State Award

Coogs know, convenient parking is prime real estate at UH. In the past few years, the University of Houston has enhanced the campus with two new garages. Its latest received a state award.

In August, the Texas Parking and Transportation Association named the new University Gateway Garage the state's best new parking structure. The six-story garage, which opened in summer 2020, can accommodate up to 2,500 vehicles and is equipped with electric-vehicle charging stations for the eco-friendly driver. With an eye-catching fountain and beautifully landscaped walk, it is one of the first new centerpieces in the reimagining of UH’s main entry along University Boulevard from Spur 5.

The exterior design features metal screening with integrated LED lights that change colors and can be programmed to follow distinct iridescent patterns. Built with safety and convenience in mind, the garage has more than 100 security cameras and an electronic guidance system that identifies parking availability via a digital sign on the garage's entrance.

In summer 2019, the University opened the Elgin Street Garage – a multi-service building that also houses student workshops, art studios, exhibition rooms and office space. It also accommodates 2,500 parking spaces. Collectively, the two garages added 5,000 parking spaces to the campus.
