BLOOD, ART AND A SUMMER TRADITION
BEHIND THE CURTAIN OF THE HOUSTON SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

The Houston Shakespeare Festival has been a summer tradition at Miller Outdoor Theatre for 45 seasons. Produced by the UH School of Theatre & Dance, the festival features a Shakespearean tragedy and comedy. This year’s production of “Julius Caesar” included a subliminal homage to Houston’s visual art scene with its contemporary set and enhanced the dramatic scenes with stage blood concocted with items including dish soap, sugar-free chocolate syrup, sesame tahini and non-toxic paint – a mixture intended to be washed easily out of the sleek costumes.
