A Day to Remember
UH Community Honors Lives at Annual Day of Remembrance
The University of Houston gathered Tuesday, March 24, for its annual UH Day of Remembrance, honoring faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends who passed away over the previous year. The ceremony, held in the University Chapel of the A.D. Bruce Religion Center, offered a moment for reflection, connection and tribute.
The service included thoughtful remarks, moments of silence and the symbolic lighting of candles to commemorate those who left a lasting impact on the Cougar community.
Candles were lit by Staff Council President Marti Trummer-Cabrera, Board President Sandy Lee, Faculty Council Chairperson Melissa Markofski, and representatives for students and alumni. Each flame symbolized unity and remembrance, illuminating the collective strength of the University community.
“These beautiful candles represent our fallen students, faculty, staff, alumni and cherished friends. They symbolize their spirit, the light they brought to our classrooms, and the joy and happiness they brought to their friends and loved ones,” said President Renu Khator.
The ceremony concluded with 27 chimes, honoring UH’s founding year and serving as a poignant reminder of the enduring influence of those remembered.

"As the rising of the sun and at its setting,
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of the winter,
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring,
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
At the beginning of the year and when it ends,
As long as we live, they too will live; For they will always be part of us, as we remember them."
