UH Today Unveils Sleek Redesign for 2024

Did you notice? UH Today entered the new year adapted for an advanced digital age. As the University of Houston's official employee newsletter, UH Today, plays a pivotal role in keeping more than 11,000 faculty and staff informed and connected — which is why readability matters.

It has been nearly a decade since the newsletter was sent to the drawing board, and since then, readers' needs, industry best practices and technology capabilities have changed. The new design features a larger font, more images, tight and bright summaries, a larger events section, and a greater focus on the people and success of UH.

“UH is on a fast-paced trajectory to become a top 50 public university, and the UH Today team is proud to share the stories of the people and programs that are making that growth possible,” said Lisa Holdeman, vice president for University Marketing and Communications. “We want to create a product that our fellow employees look forward to reading and becoming informed advocates for our University in their communities.”

With so many people on the move throughout the day, the redesign also places a strong emphasis on being mobile friendly. The new format enables autoscaling and stacked scrolling, so users can access UH Today seamlessly whether they are at their desktop or on their mobile phones. Just as important, the new format is designed to put accessibility at the forefront to better accommodate the technical needs of screen reader services.

“The mobile-friendly approach reflects our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the University community, where accessibility is key,” said Shawn Lindsey, associate vice president for media relations.

Sometimes small changes make a big impact. Another standout feature of the revamped UH Today is the introduction of bigger text — a popular request received during a recent reader survey. Afterall, it doesn’t matter how great the content is if it’s too small to read it.

“The enhanced text size not only improves legibility but also contributes to a more engaging and visually appealing layout,” Lindsey said.

Speaking of content, while research awards and outcomes play a large role in what makes UH phenomenal, so do the people behind the scenes helping UH to reach its top 50 goal. From human resources to housing and everyone in between, UH Today content continues to shine a spotlight on the stories that celebrate the achievements of our faculty, staff and students and illustrate what makes the UH community exceptional.
