Spreading Holiday Cheer One Card at a Time

UH Staff Council hosts holiday card making event for the community

This December, the University of Houston’s Staff Council is spreading some holiday cheer to the Third Ward community with a heartfelt initiative. With colorful, handmade cards, they hope to brighten the holidays for senior citizens at the Walipp Senior Residence Facility.

Juanita Hall, co-chair for the Community Outreach Program, organized the event with the mission to spread joy to those who may be struggling during the holiday season.

“In the past, I’ve really enjoyed doing things for the community, especially during the holidays,” Hall said. “Originally, I thought about caroling at nursing homes, but the idea evolved to creating holiday cards for the elders. I believe the hands-on nature of making the cards adds a personal touch that shows we care.”

Staff Council Program Manager Courtney Washington played a key role in coordinating the logistics for the event.

“Giving back to the community is something we do annually through the Community Outreach Program,” Washington said. “These cards are going to senior citizens who may not have family nearby or who are permanent residents at the facility. For those who don’t have loved ones close by, we want to be their family during the holidays. While this season is joyful for many, it can also be difficult for some. A simple card expressing love and happiness can go a long way.”

The event welcomed participation from the entire Cougar community. Among the attendees was Katie Guidroz from the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership.

“I’m just hoping to put a smile on someone else’s face,” Guidroz said.

Keeping in line with the holiday spirit, Communications Coordinator Bradi Zapata reflected on how the holidays puts her in a jolly mood.

“I just really love the holiday season and any reason to celebrate,”  Zapata said.

The program’s success is thanks to the generosity and compassion of UH staff members like Staff Program Manager Cyndi Romero.

“This is a good cause, and I’m especially glad it’s local, benefiting the Third Ward community. My grandmother was in a senior home for about seven years, and a lot of residents didn't have visitors. I’m happy to see something like this being done, because any little thing can brighten your day.”

Through Staff Council’s heartfelt initiative of handmade cards, the Cougar community came together to ensure that the senior citizens of Third Ward feel seen, loved and valued this holiday season.
