Hearne joined Staff Council in 2013 and has since held several positions, including president-elect, historian and an appointment as co-chair for the community outreach committee. Karl is passionate about fostering community and helping UH staff and faculty reach their fullest potential.
In this Q&A, we get to know Hearne better and explore his experiences and insights as Staff Council president.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
KH: I am a proud Houston Cougar through and through, having earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Houston. Additionally, I hold three degrees from a theological seminary here in Houston.
Currently, I serve as the executive assistant to Elwyn Lee, vice president for neighborhood and strategic initiatives. In this role, we manage a variety of University initiatives, including the impactful Third Ward Initiative, working to strengthen our community in alignment with UH’s mission. I also have the privilege of advising four student organizations: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Meditation Monday, Good News Gospel Choir, Red Poets Society.
How long have you been with UH?
KH: I have been working with the University of Houston since 2002, and this year marks my 22nd year of service. I first attended UH in 2001 to pursue my bachelor’s degree in consumer science and merchandising. Later, I was fortunate to earn my Master of Science in human resource development from UH as well in 2010.
What inspired you to pursue a career in academia?
KH: The love and support I’ve received from so many people in this community inspired me to pursue a career in academia. Dr. Lee was a great mentor to me during my time as his student assistant, where I had the privilege of working on numerous special projects. I also have deep admiration for President Renu Khator — she is truly inspiring, and it has been wonderful working alongside her over the years. So many people have poured into me, and my goal is to do the same for others.
What motivated you to take on the role of Staff Council president?
KH: I was motivated to take on this role so I could advocate for our staff and support staff and student success. Whether it’s our groundskeepers, cafeteria workers or professors, everyone deserves the same respect. I want our staff to know that they are valued, loved and appreciated.
In your words how would you describe the role of Staff Council? And how do they represent UH?
KH: Staff Council serves as a campuswide advisory group to the president and university administration, always striving to improve staff relations and enhance the campus experience. Whether through initiatives like Cougar First Impressions or our Annual Staff Focus, we are continuously seeking ways to grow and make a positive impact.
What are ways people can get involved with the group?
KH: There are several ways to get involved with Staff Council. First, you can attend our meetings, held every first Thursday of the month on Teams from 1 - 3 p.m., where we feature guest speakers from across campus. You can also join a committee or take on a co-chair role.
On Fridays, we foster campus community by wearing our “UH Staff Wear Red on Fridays” shirts. We invite staff to join us for lunch at Cougar Woods or Moody Dining Hall, where you can connect with others and learn more about becoming involved in Staff Council.
What are your main goals for your term as Staff Council president?
KH: I want to focus on doing more with less. I want to make an impact while also making sure our staff is being valued. I want to challenge my peers to focus on quality not quantity and utilizing peoples’ talents.
I also aim to raise awareness of Staff Council and its initiatives. We have partnered with the UH Third Ward Initiative to enhance our community through activities such as community clean-ups and holiday drives. Additionally, we are collaborating with the SGA awareness campaign, “Why I Vote,” which encourages both students and staff to register to vote. Through these efforts, we strive to cultivate a sense of pride within the UH community.
How would you describe your leadership style and how do you inspire your committee?
I would never ask my peers to do something I wouldn’t do myself. I strive to meet people where they are and support their growth, and help them become better leaders whether that means offering a word of encouragement or helping them embrace their creativity. My goal is to restore the family aspect of the Council and ensure that everyone feels included.
What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of your academic work?
I do a lot of mentoring in my free time. I also have other leadership positions outside of the University. I actively volunteer in my community and church, and you can often find me helping out at my church’s food pantry and various community service-oriented events.
What do you want our UH community to know about you?
Regardless of your circumstances, as long as you embrace a positive attitude you can make a phenomenal impact whether you know it or not.
What do you plan to do after your term is over?
I plan to continue working with Staff Council, focusing on raising awareness of our council among staff. Additionally, I aim to enhance our community outreach efforts and continuing to make our community a better place on behalf of the University of Houston.
What are three words you’d use to describe UH?
Opportunity, growth, excellence
