C.F. McElhinney Distinguished Service Award

A hearty congratulations to Ginger Walker, director of Emergency Management, who received the 2023 C.F. McElhinney Distinguished Service Award.

Recipients of this award consistently contribute at the highest level to the teaching and service objectives of our University. They are considered true leaders and role models.

"UH has been a part of my life for a long time," Walker said, reflecting on her deep-rooted connection. "My family has a long history of being part of the UH family; my father-in-law was a longtime administrator, faculty member and leader here at UH; my husband is an honors alum and current employee; and now, my daughter is a staff member. I am deeply humbled to be the recipient this year."

Walker started working at UH more than 25 years ago as an office assistant and has served as the deputy director for many years before accepting the position of director of emergency management in 2020. In these roles, she has made exemplary contributions to ensuring the university’s emergency preparedness and resilience. In times of crisis, she demonstrates with ease her skills as a gifted coordinator, collaborator, program manager and leader.

Through her unwavering efforts, she supports the University's goal of becoming a top 50 public university.

"Emergency Management incorporates the mission and core values of the institution every single day," Walker explained. "We develop innovative ways to better prepare students for emergencies, we collaborate among our Big 12 colleagues, our local, state and federal agencies, and we increase resilience to any emergency that comes our way."

Faculty and staff alike have praised Walker’s cooperative and communicative leadership and teamwork. Again, congratulations to Ginger Walker. We are fortunate to have her as part of our Cougar family!
